Latest COVID testing - Should you take a PCR or RAT test?

Are you worried whether you need to take a PCR or RAT test? Don't worry, here are the recent updates from different states. Some states in Australia are more inclined towards prioritising PCR tests for people with a higher risk of severe illness.

The current guidelines for using RATs versus PCR for each state is mentioned below:

New South Wales:

  • At higher risk of severe illness.
  • Otherwise, do a RAT unless adviced by a doctor

Victoria:

  • At higher risk of severe illness.
  • Otherwise, take a RAT.

Queensland:

  • Take a RAT if you develop symptoms
  • Otherwise, get a PCR test at a private pathology-operated collection site or a GP respiratory clinic.

South Australia:

  • PCR testing if you have any COVID-19 symptoms.

Western Australia:

  • PCR testing available without a referral for people with COVID-like symptoms and asymptomatic close contacts.

Tasmania:

  • Take a RAT or PCR

Australian Capital Territory

  • At higher risk of severe COVID-19 illness
  • Work in high-risk settings or in-home aged care or disability care
  • Have a referral from GP or clinician
  • Are unable to use a RAT, or
  • Had a negative RAT but still have symptoms

Northern Territory

  • Are a close contact who can't access a RAT
  • Have had negative RATs but still have symptoms
  • Have recently returned from overseas and develop symptoms within 7 days of arriving in Australia.
