Are you worried whether you need to take a PCR or RAT test? Don't worry, here are the recent updates from different states. Some states in Australia are more inclined towards prioritising PCR tests for people with a higher risk of severe illness.
The current guidelines for using RATs versus PCR for each state is mentioned below:
New South Wales:
- At higher risk of severe illness.
- Otherwise, do a RAT unless adviced by a doctor
Victoria:
- At higher risk of severe illness.
- Otherwise, take a RAT.
Queensland:
- Take a RAT if you develop symptoms
- Otherwise, get a PCR test at a private pathology-operated collection site or a GP respiratory clinic.
South Australia:
- PCR testing if you have any COVID-19 symptoms.
Western Australia:
- PCR testing available without a referral for people with COVID-like symptoms and asymptomatic close contacts.
Tasmania:
- Take a RAT or PCR
Australian Capital Territory
- At higher risk of severe COVID-19 illness
- Work in high-risk settings or in-home aged care or disability care
- Have a referral from GP or clinician
- Are unable to use a RAT, or
- Had a negative RAT but still have symptoms
Northern Territory
- Are a close contact who can't access a RAT
- Have had negative RATs but still have symptoms
- Have recently returned from overseas and develop symptoms within 7 days of arriving in Australia.
